April 6, 1996 – private, paper journal

Just two more weeks until opening night and in some ways, I think my actors are ready, but in other ways, I feel they aren't at all. I know what I want, I can show what I want, but sometimes I don't think they entirely grasp it. I can't act it for them, though the temptation is there. Sometimes I still just want to be up on that stage, even though I love what I do now.

[a jagged scribble]

Oh my God. I think I just heard an owl hooting. In the city.

[several dots from pen tip taps]

It's been ten years now, I thought after all this time I'd stop thinking I'm of any interest to him at all, but I still can't shake the feeling. I don't think I'm entirely wrong in feeling like this, it isn't as though owls are all that common here. In Connecticut, yes, but not here.

Even if they were, what does it say about me that my first reaction is to think of him?

I need to sleep.

"Right, see you tomorrow!" Sarah called at the retreating back of one of her lighting men, the buoyancy of her tone and general demeanor a contrast to the lengthy hours she had just spent in the theater with no sleep. The days before a performance were like that, as every little detail needed to been checked and rechecked. Though worn out, it was the kind of feeling that left her a little over-animated and wired but not as alert, that point past tired but before total exhaustion set in and she absolutely had to sleep.

Flipping open her date book as she locked the inner doors behind her, she looked down just in time to see a bookmark slither out of the book and hit the polished floors with a metallic ping. Stooping, she retrieved it, studying the ornately-wrought, gold-colored metal creation with a perplexed frown. Funny, she hadn't remembered having this bookmark.

It was likely a prop she grabbed accidentally sometime during the day, so she would just return it tomorrow when she wasn't running late. Had she been less tired right now, that funny prickle of wariness that came at times might have been there, but right now, the prop explanation seemed more than reasonable.

Letting forth a small sigh, she checked a page and then shoved the bookmark back in her date book, stowing the book in her enormous bag. One more stop and then she could crash in her apartment and read until her mind stopped running so fast. She made quick work of the outer door locks and then turned from them, starting off in her usual direction and only after a few steps fully taking in her surroundings. Normally, it was simply habit of living in the city, looking around at once, but approaching exhaustion dulled the speed of those actions.

She froze in mid-step. Where there had been recognizable buildings and other things hours earlier, there was now total and complete unfamiliarity. She turned back toward the theater, finding it shockingly missing as well. Tired or not, this was not right. At all.

"Damn." Rather than a frustrated exclamation, this was a softly issued gasp. At the moment, the only thing she was certain of what that she was not in New York. Another might have been speechless, but for Sarah, it wasn't out of the realm of possibility for this to be happening.
